One thing about me is I’m gonna eat a fucking snack. And maybe another and maybe another.

My nourishment quite literally depends on it.

And I know there’s a lot of stigma around needing snacks, 2000s diet culture really convinced us that we don’t need snack snacks.

That’s just simply not the case for most people , especially neurodivergent folks who struggle with hunger and fullness cues, appetite and consistent eating!

Eat that snack, bitch!!!!

Aye, I’m not knocking the potential help of setting reminders, but I think it’s a universal neurodivergent experience to have someone insinuate that reminders are all you need… As if you haven’t had reminders set before & just straight up ignored them lmao

Anyways, here’s some tools that have worked better than reminders to help my clients eat more consistently:

🧡 Prioritizing convenience & accessibility:
If the majority of food options you keep around require some type of time/labor to prepare, it is a lot more likely you’re goin to opt out of eating when your spoons are low. Staying stocked with grabbable, ready-to-eat food options can make eating consistently feel a lot less overwhelming,

🧡 Honoring your preferences:
In addition to convenience, you’re going to want to have food you actually like… & dare I say LOVEEE. If you’re trying to eat so “healthy” that nothing you have sounds good, you’re going to keep under-eating (& maybe subsequently overeating)

🧡 Sequencing/habit stacking:
Reminders can be helpful to remind your brain of the things you may easily forget, but they don’t typically increase your motivation to do something or make it work with whatever else you’ve got going on when that reminder goes off. ADHD brains don’t run on time (hence time blindness), we instead run on sequences. Like “after my coffee I get dressed, after I get dressed I brush my teeth…” If you’re finding yourself forgetting to eat, it can be helpful to identify where in your current sequences you can sneak in a snack or two. This will naturally remind you while minimizing any disruptions to your pre-existing flow!

Anytime I can get some extra protein in a way that feels like a sweet treat… ima go ahead & hyperfixate on it until I burn out 🥰

Rn “fluffy yogurt” is doing it for me every. Single. Time.

It’s basically just greek yogurt whipped with vanila ice cream protein powder & a lil sugar free vanilla pudding mix + topped with crunchy things like chopped nuts & chocolate chips.

“Perfect” eating habits often come with the cost, whether it’s physical or psychological.

This is your reminder that what is healthy for you will likely look very different than what is healthy for others & if you’re basing your judgments of your food choices off of what influencers POST, then you’re likely not create very sustainable habits!

If you want to create health-promoting eating behaviors that actually satisfied you and last you a lifetime, you’ll need to focus on what feels good to YOU… and be less concerned about what other people are doing. Especially on social media, given most people are not transparent about their eating habits online.

“Perfect” eating habits often come with the cost, whether it’s physical or psychological.

This is your reminder that what is healthy for you will likely look very different than what is healthy for others & if you’re basing your judgments of your food choices off of what influencers POST, then you’re likely not create very sustainable habits!

If you want to create health-promoting eating behaviors that actually satisfied you and last you a lifetime, you’ll need to focus on what feels good to YOU… and be less concerned about what other people are doing. I have clients come to me all the time saying the roots of their binge eating is emotional eating or their canna-habits, & though that is TOTALLY a piece of the puzzle, if your hunger is dysregulated (via meal skipping, procrastinating eating, fasting in the morning, etc) then you will always struggle with overeating urges!

You can’t override the physiological cause of overeating! If you want to unpack your emotional eating, the munchies or any other secondary root causes to overeating, you’ll want to start with wherever you are UNDER eating!

& this applies to emotional eating & the munchies too!! I have clients come to me all the time saying the roots of their binge eating is emotional eating or their canna-habits, & though that is TOTALLY a piece of the puzzle, if your hunger is dysregulated (via meal skipping, procrastinating eating, fasting in the morning, etc) then you will always struggle with overeating urges!

You can’t override the physiological cause of overeating! If you want to unpack your emotional eating, the munchies or any other secondary root causes to overeating, you’ll want to start with wherever you are UNDER eating!

Then you expect me to compile a balanced meal, spend time and energy cooking it in a eat that will satisfy me & then CLEAN IT ALL UP AFTERWARDS???

I had to do a lot of editing & slowly get comfortable with making more food decisions (while relying ALOT on convenience) to finally get to a point where I was able to feed myself consistently!

I’ve tried to make resources to help neurodivergent folks with this struggle!

I hear this soooo often, y’all!

& I completely understand where that desire is coming from!

But the reality is, you have very little control over what you do & don’t like!!

& trying to change your preferences will likely keep you stuck in friction & restraint.

Of course, it’d be reallll fkn convenient to CRAVE really nutritious foods! It’d make having a nourishing diet a lot easier, that’s for sure lol

But here’s the harm in rooting your goals in comparison…

Goals rooted in comparison don’t leave room for YOU & YOUR barriers to nourishment.

The pattern of eating that is going to work for you, keep you satisfied & actually feel sustainable long term will ALWAYS be the one that honors your likes/dislikes, addresses your barriers, accommodates your needs!!

And that means accepting that you may not like foods that others do!

AND THE WORLD KEEPS SPINNINIINNGGGG!

Full permission to hold grief & frustration around the fact that eating nutritiously feels harder to navigate for you than for others!

Especially a neurodivergent person, that’s something you’ll continue to feel in many facets of your life… shit just looks different for you!

But the sooner you accept that, the sooner you can uncover what methods work for YOU!

You can still find ways to increase your nutrition without changing your preferences, it just takes a bit more creativity & maybe some support!

The food choices I make are not out of guilt or shame, they are not aimed to make me thinner or change my body… they are made with the intention to feel my best within the limits of my own bandwidth!

This usually looks like…
💚 Honoring my cravings
💚 Adding nutrition wherever I can (especially if I can *sneak* it in)
💚Prioritizing consistent eating via convenient, accessible food options

Nutrition doesn’t have to be about restriction & restraint.

In fact, it SHOULDN’T be!

Your body isn’t keep score of all the things you avoid eating… it just wants to be NOURISHED!

Crazy concept for some to grasp, I know.

ESPECIALLY those who happened to lose weight at one point in their life…

Or those who experience a sense of moral superiority for what they feel they’ve done to deserve their straight-sized body.

But the evidence is clear, body size is hugely genetic… & clinging to the misconception that everyone has the potential to maintain a straight sized body (in a healthy way) truly helps NO ONE!

As an ADHDer myself, & a healthcare professional who supports neurodivergent folks with their eating habits..

I’ve learned more about how to support neurodivergent people from the sharing of lived experiences directly from other ND folks than I have from ANY other sources.

The children of early autism/ADHD interventions are grown now… and they have some perspective to share about which interventions/approaches caused them harm and which ones felt supportive.

I once heard someone say that being neurodivergent can feel like existing is constant contradiction & it’s sooooo true. It can be so hard to explain yourself to people that don’t understand why one task feels easy and another (of equal time & labor) somehow feels impossible!

This is one of the main reasons I turned by tried & true neurodivergent-affirming intuitive eating coaching into a GROUP program, because community is VITAL in releasing shame & actually find systems that work for YOU!

But how much of your resistance to convenient food options is REALLY about waste/sustainability & how much is about the internalized ableism around choosing the “easy” option?

I also totally get that convenience can come with a price tag, but so does not eating the food you buy & having to order out more often!!

Odds are, addressing & accommodating YOUR needs is the least wasteful option for you! Okay? Okay 😘

Then you mayyybeee eat a little bit of food during your work day.

Partly because you didn’t bring much to eat (despite trying hard to stay consistent with packing lunches or meal prepping or planning ahead etc)

& also because when your ADHD ass gets *locked in* on a task, cues from your body leave the chat.

Until these cues are no longer subtle nudges but LOUD, ALARM BELLS!

“Omg I’m gonna piss my pants if I don’t get up rn”

Or “holy fuck im so hungry I can’t wait to make a meal I need to eat NOW”

*Queue the endless afterwork snacking*

And even when you do have an adequate, balanced meal, it’s not enough.

You’re still hungry.

You’re not satisfied.

Not to mention your dysregulated ass who spent all day masking their neurodivergence & running on E now is DESPERATELY craving some dopamine.

Which is why even when the ravenous hunger subsides, and you KNOW you’re full… you keep eating, because the oral stimulation is hittttinngggg.

Then you go to bed, feeling like shit, sleep like shit & do it again in the morning, feeling more guilt ridden & trapped by the day.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

But the solution is not in another meal plan, or diet…

It’s in addressing and accommodating@your neurodivergence, your unmet needs & your preferences & your personal barriers to consistent, sustainable nourishment.

That’s the work we do in this corner of the internet 😘

I totally get WHY you might think that using calorie counting to keep inventory of your intake would stop you from emotionally eating…

But the food isn’t the problem.

Control isn’t the solution.

If you have an emotional relationship with food that causes you to over-eat, then you have unmet emotional needs that need to be identified and addressed.

ESPECIALLY if you’re neurodivergent.

On top of the usual reasons for emotional eating like stress, sadness, etc… neurodivergent folks also have needs for unmasking & stimulation that make their relationship with food even more complicated.

We often dopamine seek with food (not to mention we often under eat in the daytime so that makes it worse) & we experience more frequent burnout related to the inherently draining experience of being neurodivergent in a Neurotypical system.

I could go on for days about this, but long story short, if you over eat and feel like a lot of it is emotional, no amount of calorie tracking, dieting or control is going to resolve the root cause of this issue… your unmet emotional needs.

in fact, calorie, counting and restriction is significantly more likely to exacerbate behaviors of over eating than it is to resolve them !!!

But MOST people who were exposed to dieting at a very young age are still actively trying to pick up the pieces of their broken relationships with food & their bodies late into adulthood.

So just know, if you feel like your experience is dieting, we’re literally TRAUMATIC… you’re not being traumatic.

& if you’re still struggling, you’re definitely not alone!

It’s important that if you feel this way, you surround yourself with others who can echo that lived experience even if it’s just by following accounts on social media!

Especially in this Ozempic era where weight loss conversations are so common and overwhelming, be sure to remember that the harm dieting caused you was real, your feelings are VALID & you have every right to continue to disengage with the diet talk!

If you are someone who’s stuck in cycles of under and over eating , especially if you’re neurodivergent, the solution here is to focus on eating ENOUGH, & releasing other expectations around eating until you are in a place of consistent & adequate intake!

Releasing the rules can also help you simultaneously chip away at this “forbidden food” scarcity mindset that makes you feel out of control around foods you consider “bad”

You were taught that there is a “right” and “wrong” way to eat.

this is especially true for neurodivergent folks who not only had to entertain all of the rules of diet culture, but also the social expectations of neuronormativity.

I have met so many neurodivergent women who hold immense guilt and shame about not just their food choices, but their actual preferences.

They use language like “I have the palate of a child” or call their preferences childish.

This is ableism at its finest.

& it’s exactly why neurodivergent folks find themselves binging on all of these “forbidden” foods at the end of the day, once they’re too tired to “perform” 😅

If you want to create sustainable eating habits, they have to feel like YOU.

Your preferences for flavors & textures need to be prioritized.

Your needs for convenience in the context of your neurodivergence HAS to be accepted.

Your affinity towards novelty should be utilized & leveraged.

Then & only then, can you break free of the cycles of under- & over-eating, the guilt & shame of your food choices & the yoyo-dieting.

This often looks like staying stocked with your safe foods, keeping quick and convenient food options like microwavable meals & shopping with a layer of honesty about what your current capacity is for meal prep/cooking!

Part of learning how to build sustainable habits as a neurodivergent person is leaning into the ebbs & flows of not just like but your own fkn BRAIN!!

The more you can just accept that there WILL be days/weeks/months where you’ve got less spoons, the better you can plan ahead, prepare & stay ready with plans B & C!

This often looks like staying stocked with your safe foods, keeping quick and convenient food options like microwavable meals & shopping with a layer of honesty about what your current capacity is for meal prep/cooking!

couch rotting is one of the most precious things in the world to me & i had to come to terms with it being a necessary tool for decompression and unmasking while ALSO being something that has the potential to create some harm if I overuse it!

I need it when I need it but sometimes I also need sun on my skin or fresh air or an actual nap or food or connection or whatever else I could possibly need!!

I’d love to hear your thoughts & lived experiences with “rotting”!! When does it feel restorative & when does it feel potentially harmful?

This doesn’t include all the non-health-related things that matter so much more in life than the way your body looks.. but I know the “health” argument is one of the loudest when it comes to weight stigma, so just know there’s plenty other things to focus on if health is a concern for yours!

I have an adequate, nutritious & balanced diet BECAUSE I’ve prioritized convenience & ease.

There is NO need to hold shame about not having the time, energy or bandwidth for traditional cooking!!

In fact, harboring unnecessary guilt about your needs just keeps you from meeting those needs & forming sustainable eating habits!!!

My airfryer, instant pot, frozen/canned foods, & “sneaky” nutrition products are vital to my nourishment practices, & idgaf what ANYONE has to say about it.

ESPECIALLY ppl who have no clue what it’s like to struggle with executive dysfunction & demand avoidance 🤷‍♀️
